Italian for Beginners — Lesson 8: The Weather and Seasons

Welcome back to Italian for Beginners!

In Lesson 7 you learned how to describe your daily routine — what time you wake up, what you do in the morning and evening, and how to talk about everyday activities.

Today we’re looking outside the window. Weather is one of the most common conversation topics in Italian (and almost every language). It’s also extremely useful when you’re travelling, making plans, or just chatting.

Andiamo! — Let’s go!

Translation:
Anna: Hi Marco! What’s the weather like today?
Marco: Hi Anna! The weather is nice. It’s sunny and hot.
Anna: Perfect! I like it when it’s hot. And yesterday?
Marco: Yesterday it was raining.
Anna: Ah, then better today!

5. Practice

Exercise 1 — Translate into Italian

  1. What’s the weather like?
  2. It’s raining.
  3. It’s very cold.
  4. I like summer.
  5. Today the weather is nice.

Exercise 2 — Complete the sentences

  1. Oggi ______ bel tempo. (fa / fa)
  2. In inverno ______ freddo. (fa / è)
  3. Mi piace quando ______ il sole. (c’è / fa)
  4. Non mi piace quando ______. (piove / neve)

Tip of the day

When you’re learning weather vocabulary, look out of your real window and describe what you see in Italian. Even one sentence a day (“Oggi piove” or “C’è il sole”) helps the words stick.

You’ve finished Lesson 8! You can now talk about the weather and the seasons in Italian.

Next time we’ll look at family and describing people.

A presto! — See you soon!
